Attention Field Owners! There are some insurance and safety issues that have come to the forefront regarding First Strike rounds and the Rap4 rounds. This product was not around during the initial design of the Paintball insurance program and now seem to be more popular. Since there have been a few claims it had come to the front burner with our carriers, as they are the ones that write the checks. The use of these projectiles are not allowed under our current program, and pricing for them has not been contemplated as of yet.

We have excess and surplus lines carriers that will entertain them but their minimum premium is $15,000 to $20,000 per year. They do not have a “Paintball program” and just underwrite and price on a one on one basis.

Vote at ASTMThere is a ballot at the ASTM up for vote and must be voted on in 10 days. I would like for your response on if you want these products included in Paintball insurance and are willing to pay a higher premium. All input is important both pro and con.

The company and people that are pushing for allowing this projectile to be included as a Paintball have done some of their tests where they measured the force against a piece of metal with sensors beneath saying that it was similar to a Paintball hit. Well if you shoot a piece of metal it spreads the force across the metal, not in a defined spot as if it hit you. It does appear to hit harder. It does appear to have caused cuts. It does chrono much faster compared to a Paintball. It does travel farther than a Paintball. They have done their “own” tests on masks and say that they pass, but not by a lab in a controlled environment which is the ASTM standard.

There have been several tests with the First Strike rounds, here is one that someone did with gel, and you see the shell fragments stuck into the gel. First Strike Test Video We have tested Paintball netting with the Paintball test and it failed, as well as other field owners have had the same results. Its’s GI Sportz, Tippman, and Kee’s position that they do not support First Strike as a Paintball product and that their masks are not rated for First Strike. Most field owners tell me that they do not allow them.

It’s my personal position that while I think that they are cool, I don’t want to be shot with one while playing in a normal recreational game. There should be a separate standard for a shaped projectile, there should be changes to the ASTM field standard, the ASTM goggle standard, the ASTM netting standard to address these projectiles as other than a normal Paintball.

We at First Strike are very excited to announce that ASTM International F1979-10 “Projectiles used in the sport of Paintball” including shaped paintballs has been approved and published!
We would like to thank everyone involved at the ASTM including all the F08 Main committee and F08.24 Paintball subcommittee who helped move this through over the last few years. We would also like to thank all the vocal retailers, field owners and players who joined ASTM to let their voice be heard through votes. An additional thank you to all the retailers, field owners and players who took the time to write, email and call subcommittee members with testimonials about how shaped projectiles have changed the sport for the better.
This is an important 1st step into wider acceptance of shaped projectiles at all our local fields and stores, but remember the battle isn’t over. There has been years of bad information disseminated that needs to be debunked. Our players and game promoters have done a great job discussing the benefits of rounds like FSR and of Magfed paintball in general. All that grassroots support has proven to be critical for success as more fields and games are embracing shaped projectiles and magfed than ever before. There is too many to mention by name, but to all the leading game organizers, players, fields, stores and distributors who have helped to mold Magfed into what is is today, THANK YOU!

Versteht mich nich falsch.
